My Classroom

Welcome to first grade in Foxwell Forest-a place of excitement and discovery! A place where a love of learning takes root and grows!
In 2010, a lifelong dream of mine came true–I was hired as a first grade teacher and was given my very first classroom!

Yet I quickly realized that it wasn’t my classroom–it is OUR classroom!
Our classroom is student-centered and student owned. From our classroom leadership roles/jobs, to table leaders, to listening center my kids work as a team to take care of our learning space. We learn with and from each other. We also celebrate each other in lots of ways including through our daily Classroom Cheer!
I want our classroom to be a place that students are excited to come to each day! A place where they feel safe to make mistakes, and get messy. A place where they shine and always strive to be the best that they can be. A place where each person who walks through our door feels valued, special, and of great worth!
Because every child is of great worth, is wonderfully diverse, and is capable of success!
We have 3 rules in our classroom–I like to call them “rules for life” because they are rules that apply not only to the classroom, but also to all of life and to all of us:
Rule #1-Be ready to listen and to learn
Rule #2-Be respectful: Treat others the way you want to be treated
Rule #3-Be Responsible: Make good choices
One of the first things I wanted to get set up in my classroom was our classroom library! If you asked my students what I love to do, reading and books would be in the top 3!
Books play a vital role in our classroom! I love the times when we gather on our classroom carpet, that I received through Donors Choose. Books come to life on the carpet! Characters have voices, new genres are discovered, new authors are found, and together we get to embark on new adventures through the pages of the stories that we read.

I have a secret mission (ok, so it’s not so secret, because my students quickly discover my love of reading!) to get the right book into the hands of each of my students. I want them to each to grow to love reading, which is why they get to pick the books that interest them! They pick 5 “good fit” books (on their independent reading level) from their “good fit” bin (the letter bins on the bottom 2 shelves). They also pick 3 topic/themed/genre books from the top shelf of our library.

Students are the heart of education, which means that they are the heart of our classrooms!
It is their success, in all areas of life, that drives me to be the best teacher that I can be! I absolutely love what I do and feel so blessed that I get to spend my days leaving “forever fingerprints” as I daily invest in the lives of my students!
